How to Apply Patient Pre-Payment Balance to an Open Invoice

This tutorial will explore basic checkout procedure for patients who make payment for any outstanding invoice balance using an existing pre-payment credit.

Review Patient Balances

Users can review patients' balances directly from their summary profile pages. This is also the place where pre-payments can be taken in advance of patient's billing needs:

Select an Invoice

In the Patients tab, look to "Invoices" toggle in the information box near the bottom of the general summary. Click the number of any existing invoice that you would like to work with:

Review Billable Items, Codes, and Payers

Before collecting payment, be sure to review all applicable billing fields to ensure that codes, quantities, prices, and responsible payers are correct. When ready, click "Collect patient pay":

Select Payment Method

The patient payment menu will open from the right-hand side of your screen. To make a payment, match the "Amount for Payment 1" to the total amount of patient credit that you would like to apply. Then select "Unapplied payments" from the Payment Method drop-down menu. If the totals for patient balance owed, amount for payment 1, and net patient credit all match, you can apply the full value of the patient credit by clicking "Post Payment":

Once any payment is posted, the invoice converts from "open" (green dot) to "posted" (red dot) status, and the patient balance will be reflected in totals box in the upper-right hand part of your screen. Payment history can be viewed using the drop-down arrow within each line item, or by clicking "View Payment History":

The patient's updated net balances will also be reflected on their summary profile page:
